As of July 20, 2018, the Canada Child Benefit is increasing for families across the country. Yesterday, Minister Wilson-Raybould was excited to announce the increase at Phoenix Gymnastics in Vancouver Granville alongside MP Gordie Hogg from South Surrey-White Rock and a number of fantastic Phoenix staff members, young athletes and parents.
Since 2016 we have seen the positive effects of the Canada Child Benefit across the country. It has lifted more than 500,000 Canadians, including 300,000 children, out of poverty. The Canada Child Benefit has helped millions of families pay for organized sports, summer day camps, and healthy food for their children. Our government’s benefit does not tell parents how to spend the money. We know that parents are entirely capable of determining how that money is appropriately spent. It has made a huge difference for families right across the country and right here in Vancouver Granville.
What does the increase in money look like? For the 2018-19 benefit year, the CCB will have a maximum annual benefit of $6,496 per child under 6 years old and $5,481 per child aged 6 to 17 years. On average, families will receive $6,800 a year, tax-free, to put healthy food on the table, pay for summer camp, and buy new clothes for the upcoming school year.
